National Geographic Emerging Explorer 2021-2022, National Geographic Society Washington, D.C.

Lehua was awarded a National Geographic Emerging Explorer Award in June 2021 for her work in the practice of non-instrument navigation. She plans to improve the ways learners around the world can find meaningful relationships to the natural world and take action to protect it.

Director’s Fellows represent interdisciplinary and innovative individuals from around the world who collaborate to imagine novel ways of combining scientific research and inquiry with various representations of media and art. My work presently focuses on blending voyaging concepts with ocean research to build a larger ocean conservation community.


First Nations Futures Program Fellow 2017-2018, Stanford University & Ho‘okele Strategies Honolulu, HI

The First Nations Futures Program brings together indigenous and First Nations leaders

from New Zealand, Hawaii and Alaska. Fellows provide support and guidance while

each navigates a balance between traditional cultural values and modern complex

economic and political systems.
