Moananuiākea Voyage for Earth 2023-2027

The current voyage underway, led by the Polynesian Voyaging Society, has just completed itʻs first yearʻs journey.  Beginning in Juneau, Alaska in May 2023, the voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa conducted a 7-month visit of communities, villages, nations, and ocean sites from Yakutat, Alaska, south to San Diego, California.  The voyage will continue through early 2027, completing a circuit of the Pacific Ocean, a place that is central to leadership and decisions about our ocean future.  Please find more information on this ongoing voyage here at the Polynesian Voyaging Society website

Kealaikahiki 2022

In April 2022, the voyaging canoes Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia embarked on their first major voyage since postponements in 2020.  The route consisted of a round-trip sailing to islands in French Polynesia, including Rangiroa, Tahiti, and Moʻorea.  The southbound trip was lead by a young team of captains and navigators on both vessels, while the return journey was shared with our distinguished teachers Nainoa Thompson and Bruce Blankenfeld.  Follow the journey through daily updates from our Captain, Navigators, and crew here on our youtube playlist: Voyage Playlist

Alahula Kai O Maleka - Sea Road to California 2018

Island people of the Pacific have been recognized as some of the most accomplished seafarers in history.  This is a legacy carried from ancient times, even into the modern monarchies that governed Hawaii in the 19th century.  The Alahula Kai O Maleka voyage celebrated and traced a well-traveled sea road between Hawaii and San Francisco.  Hawaiian royalty once sailed these waters in pursuit of political relationships, and many Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders would also travel this route in search of new lives and opportunities on the American continent.

This voyage was sailed by our modern 72-ft canoe, Hikianalia.  This canoe is named for a "sister star" to Hōkūleʻa, more commonly known as Arcturus.  Both stars represent a synchronous rising pair at the latitude of Hawaiʻi.  After 10 years of training, this was my first voyage as Captain and lead navigator of a voyaging canoe.  More Info

Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage 2014-2017

A voyage over 20-years in the making, the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage was a three-year journey that began in Hawaii in May 2014, and was the most ambitious in terms of length and scale, to date. Proceeding south and west from Hilo, Hawaiʻi, the voyage brought the canoe Hōkūleʻa and her rotating crew of 300+ volunteers over 25,000 nautical miles and to more than 150 ports around the world.

Mālama Hawaiʻi 2012-2013

A journey around the world first begins at home.  Prior to embarking upon our circumnavigation, two years of voyaging were conducted in the waters of Hawaiʻi, visiting our individual communities, training our next generation of leadership, and hosting over 30,000 of young Hawaiian students aboard the canoes.
